NCOD was founded in the United States and started on 10/11/1988 on the year anniversary of the 1987  March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights by Robert Eichberg (a psychologist who died from AIDS in 1985 and Jean O’Leary.

Eichberg said in 1993:  “Most people think they don’t know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact everybody does.  It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes.”

Originally celebrated in 18 states, now merged wit the Human Rights Campaign and observed in all 50 states and seven countries.
