Black History ‘Erryday’: Happy Birthday Roy Wilkins (R.I.P.)

Roy Ottoway Wilkens sunrise 8/30/1901 St. Louis, MO, sunset 9/8/198, New York.

Journalist, civil rights activist, and author.

Father left before his way born to avoid lynching and his mother died from tuberculosis when he was 4 years old.

He was raised in St. Paul, MN.

He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a sociology degree.

He was a journalist at The Minnesota Daily, an editor at The Appeal, an African-American newspaper, editor at The Call and The Crisis (the paper for NAACP).

In 1950 he co-founded the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR).

He became the Executive Secretary of the NAACP in 1955, and the Executive Director in 1964 until 1977.
