First black woman to win Best Director Prize at Sundance Film Festival in 2012.

First black woman director to be nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 2014 for Selma.

First black woman to direct a live-action film with a budget exceeding $100 million.

“I’m not a historian. I’m a storyteller” she said about her rewrites of Selma.
