Come Away Free Yourself, Breathe Be Still

Meditation is a sacred practice where we give ourselves permission to pause, for a moment, breathe deeply and actually feel our bodies. There in the meditative moment, we can consider our thoughts and experience a breath of peace.

One of the most beautiful things I’ve seen,  is to watch a group of people practice Tai Chi at the beach or a local city park. They move with such grace, not because they are perfectly coordinated or fit. It’s because they have set an intention to experience peace in community.  I call it meditation in movement.

Recently, I’ve been giving thought to meditating daily. However, I’m one of those that has to have just the right space, with the perfect alter, (I’d love another African Stool) the ideal symbols, incense, fragrant candles, blah blah blah. I can get duped into believing I need those things to meditate – perfectly.

I suspect consumerism defeats the purpose of meditation. Maybe it’s a form of spiritual procrastination. When we quiet ourselves, take a deep breath and allow ourselves to meditate imperfectly, I suspect we all can hear a sacred voice, as Ancient as the Ocean, from within. That voice, if permitted may invite us to come away, free ourselves to breathe and be still. Maybe the perfect altar in not the one we create.

Perhaps, it is the altar within – to come home for a moment. Meditate.
